THE RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE
Rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between one to three hours to complete. Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home on the same day you have surgery. (Be sure to arrange to have someone drive you home from the hospital.)
To begin the procedure, Dr. Light will make an incision either on the inside of the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or on the skin between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty). The location of this incision is determined based upon how much access is needed to the underlying nasal bones and tissues. When performed by a skilled surgeon like Dr. Light, the incision that is made during open rhinoplasty leaves a tiny, virtually invisible scar. The incision that is made inside the nostrils during closed rhinoplasty cannot be detected at all.
Closed rhinoplasty is generally recommended for primary rhinoplasty patients who wish to subtly alter their nasal shape, e.g., by reducing the projection of their nasal bridge or tip slightly. Open rhinoplasty is usually the best choice for revision (secondary) rhinoplasty patients and for primary rhinoplasty patients seeking complex functional or aesthetic changes. Correcting a deviated septum or narrowing the nostrils, for instance, requires small exterior incisions.
RHINOPLASTY CONSULTATION
Dr. Light will discuss the differences between open and closed rhinoplasty with you during your consultation. He’ll help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of both techniques before selecting the procedure that is most appropriate for your individual needs and goals. If you have specific concerns about scarring, Dr. Light will talk to you about possible methods of scar revision. Laser skin resurfacing and injectable dermal fillers can both be used to minimize the visibility of scar tissue.
There are a number of techniques that can be used to perform a rhinoplasty procedure. No two patients are the same, and we evaluate each person to determine the best technique for the result they want.

RHINOPLASTY BENEFITS
With his extensive experience and detailed understanding of facial anatomy, Dr. Light is able to change the size and shape of patients’ nasal contours to enhance their confidence and improve their breathing.
Our rhinoplasty patients enjoy the benefits of attractive nasal contours that are in harmony with their other facial features. Bringing the nose into better balance with the rest of the face makes the eyes, lips, and cheekbones more visible. Our patients say they feel more confident after having this procedure; they also enjoy having a more photogenic face.
Medically, rhinoplasty can be used to treat snoring and other breathing problems related to poor nasal airflow. This may be achieved by aligning the septum (the thin wall of tissue that separates the nasal passages) or by removing obstructions, such as nasal polyps. Dr. Light can personalize your rhinoplasty procedure to simultaneously achieve functional and cosmetic objectives, so don’t hesitate to discuss both your medical and aesthetic needs during your consultation.
RECOVERY FROM RHINOPLASTY
Dr. Light and his staff will give you detailed instructions to follow during the recovery period so that you heal as quickly and comfortably as possible. It is important to get plenty of rest in the days after surgery and to refrain from any strenuous activities. Don’t eat hard or crunchy foods for at least one week after having surgery; stick to softer foods like bananas, pudding, and oatmeal. We also advise our patients to sleep face-up while keeping their head adequately supported with pillows.
Some side effects, including bruising and swelling, may occur in the first couple of days after surgery, but these symptoms can be mitigated with cold compresses and prescription pain medicines. Most patients are able to return to work or resume their normal schedules within one week of surgery, but sports and other activities that could cause injuries to the nose should be avoided for up to two months.
Dr. Light will see you regularly after your rhinoplasty procedure to monitor how you’re healing. You’ll also be able to contact him by phone to discuss any questions or concerns you have during recovery.
